Gippsland Lakes Race Week 2012

Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club would like to invite sailors of all classes to participate in the inaugural Gippsland Lakes Race Week.
Sailed at Paynesville from April 4th to 9th, 2012
Classes sailed include Etchells, Flying Fifteens, Sports boats, Trailerables, OMR multis, OTB cats & Monos, and Cruising yachts.
Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club based at Paynesville is staging a Race Week next year, starting on April 4 and continuing until April 9
The week which is modelled closely on the very popular Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Race Weeks is the first of its kind to be held on the Gippsland Lakes. Entries from all types of sailboats are being taken. Event organiser Stuart Loft says all will be accommodated from small sailing dinghies to high performance racing machines.
Due to the fact the event is held during the Easter break emphasis is on family involvement, with off water activities playing a major part of the week.
As a part of the shore based activities the club will be holding local seafood "long lunch" on the lay day, which will be held on Good Friday, as well local vineyards will showcase our regions finest wines.
Racing will be held in 4 areas around the Paynesville area, including Lake King and Lake Victoria. Shore based spectators will be able to view the racing easily.
The week of sailing will be a mixture of short "around the buoys" racing and long distance "passage" races. The famous Easter Classic 30 race will be part of the point score, this race dates back at least 50 years and is always a popular event with sailors.
Classes of boats which have shown interest include Etchells,J24, many Catamaran fleets, as well as trailer sailers and high speed ocean Multihulls.Cruising sailors are also very welcome to take part also.
For further information please phone Stuart Loft 0488 055 462 or online at www.sailglyc.com and follow the links to the GLRW page.

Who's coming let us know below in the comments.

Trimaran Insurance

Since September insurance companies in Australia have pulled out of insuring trimarans. They believed the trimaran pool was to small for the amount of claims they were receiving. With a national push by several of the Multihull heavyweights it looks like some major progress has been made. Please read the email below.....

Good Afternoon Gents,

We have considered the predicament facing Trimaran owners and confirm we will re enter the market to provide Comprehensive Cover for both Cruising & Racing Trimarans. This decision applies to both moored and trailerable craft up to a maximum of 25years of age . Our normal Underwriting criteria with regard to construction type, claims experience etc will apply . This decision is effective immediately Our decision to cease offering cover on trimarans previously was focussed on results, our return to this market will still be focussed on results and a revised approach to underwriting will be portrayed across the portfolio . We cannot guarantee rating and excess structures may be as before although our aim is to give trimaran owners viable options on their insurance needs. Nautilus is a market leader in pleasurecraft insurance and also considers itself a close partner of the boating community, we hope this solution is something that will address recent issues around multihull owners and their pleasurecraft insurance needs. I am more than happy to discuss or meet with any owners re any requirements or suggestions you have in relation to Insuring Tri’s.

Christmas Drinks

HO HO Merry Christmas, well it's that time of year again. Even though everybody is busy this time of year, some of the crusty crew were talking about Xmas drinks. How many are really interested???? Please write a comment below with numbers so we can organize a table at the Matthew Flinders, most likely next Wednesday 21st.

HYC Training Boat Cover.

The new cover for the HYC training boat has been ordered thanks to Nanna  Lisa Miller. We should have it by late December for the grand presentation at the next club race.

Geelong Race Week.

There's been lots of talk this year about how many boats will commit to this regatta in January. Even though its not the exact format we were after I believe around 9 boats at this stage will start. We have free birthing at Docklands for the Wednesday night followed by the Melbourne to Geelong Race on the Thursday.
This will be a short 4 race series leaving sailing credits to do the Round French Island Race, Marley Point and National Regattas. Come along and join the fun.

Remember next Wednesday at the Matthew Flinders, comment below if you can make it for a meal or even a drink.

Hastings Race 4

Sailing into Hastings on Friday evening it's great to see a few tri's in the water getting ready for Saturdays race, and someone to grab the bowline. Then down to the marina bar for tea, a sleep over on Frassld, a good breakfast then out for race 4 in a very light South Easterly. About 20 minutes before the start we got a 180 degree wind shift to the Nth West so its time to get the kite ready for down wind start at MS2 as we are heading South around middle spit. We give the Monos a 15 Minute head start as usual. The rain begins to fall and Skedaddle decides to skedaddle home so now we are 5. We have a fair start, get the kite up and settle in for a great ride down to MSSCM, then over the radio we hear that Knot Tri'ng has a woman over board so in a instant [With Teeth] drops their kite and head's back to the rescue well done Mark. The wind has built to 20 +Knt's now, and Mahalbangka calls it quits as well. So now we are 2. Mean while I am having words with the skipper of a mono about windward boats keeping clear, then its time to drop the kite. We then head Nth with the sheets cracked and the traveller well down, at 14 Knt's it didn't take long to pass the leading mono, now it was really pouring down so with one eye on the plotter it was lookout for Middle Spit and keep left of French Island From MSNCM it was a beat across to 35, it appeared Sknot was making up a bit of ground on us so once around 35 I decided to give the kite a go, but as we were being blown of the track it was down again, then we rolled out the Jib for a great reach back to the finish at 28 going over the line at about 17 Knts. It was a very slow motor up the channel to the boat ramp. one of BE's crew was still wondering what had just happened. Packed up, hot shower, hot snag and home.

Banque populaire V chasing Jules Verne Trophy

Banque Populaire V has departed Lorient in France on their round the world race against the clock.  The reference time for the Jules Verne Trophy circumnavigation is 48days 7hrs 44minutes.  The boat is skippered by Loick Peyron and his crew have headed off in the most optimal weather window for achieving the record.  Banque Populaire V has smashed a number of records already including the Trans Atlantic record where it recorded a record run of 908nm in one 24 hour period.  It's also added the Fastnet record and the SNSM record to its trophy cabinet.  The SNSM record was achieved with an average speed of 30 knots.

The record is currently held by Franck Cammas and his maxi trimaran groupama3.   Banque Populaire V is off to an amazing start with an average for the first few days of 24 knots.  The tracker (which also shows Groupama3's track and position) is at:

Port Lincoln and Goolwa 2012

Hello to everyone

RE: PORT LINCOLN AND GOOLWA REGATTAS

At a meeting last week of members of our local association I was asked to put to together a letter for distribution to multi hull owners who hopefully will be prepared to give some thought to participating in either or both of the forthcoming Port Lincoln and Goolwa regattas. In this letter I will set out some facts and put forward some ideas. Feel free to give me a call. Alternatively Rob Remilton, John Hardy and Peter Boyd are fully aware of what we are planning and will be happy to discuss things with you.

Can I deal with each of these events separately. I do so as follows:

Goolwa Regatta Week

The Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club has for a long time hosted the Freshwater Classic Milang to Goolwa Yacht Race. For many years this event was the largest freshwater yacht race in the Southern Hemisphere. Due to problems with water in the lower reaches of the Murray the event has not been held for some time now. The water is now back and the expectation is that there will be a very good turnout for this classic event.

The Milang to Goolwa race is open to monos and multis. It is a 50 kilometre dash from Milang across Lake Alexandrina to the lower Murray channel at Point Sturt and then down the river to the Goolwa bridge. The Marine & Harbours people have re‑laid the channel markers during the drought and navigating the channel is not difficult. If the prevailing south westerly afternoon changes come through by the time the boats get to Point Sturt, having crossed the lake ,(as is usually the case), some very exciting sailing can be had along the lower Murray. Once out of the Lake the water is flat and the southerly often strong.

Larger boats cannot pass under the Goolwa to Hindmarsh Island bridge. A standard F31 will just fit whereas Wilparina 2 will not. However, the race will finish before the bridge for the Multis.

The Goolwa Club is running a week of sailing events as a precursor to the main Milang to Goolwa race being held on Sunday 22nd. Mono racing commences on Saturday 14 January. For the multis it is planned that there be a Goolwa to Wellington dash on Friday 20 January. This is a long race that ends at the point where the upper reaches of the Murray enter into Lake Alexandrina. Participants will then motor up the river to the Wellington Hotel and stay overnight. Accommodation is available at the hotel and boats moor on the riverbank beneath the hotel.

On Saturday 21 January it is then planned to hold a Wellington to Milang race. This will get everyone to Milang in time to anchor and participate in the all day long entertainment that will be happening on the Milang foreshore. The main event namely the Milang to Goolwa Freshwater Classic from Milang to Goolwa will then follow on Sunday 22 January.

There are a number of jettys and marinas on Hindmarsh Island where participants can tie up either before or after these races. There are ramps at North Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island where boats too tall to pass under the bridge can be launched and retrieved.

There will be a large party at the Goolwa Club during the afternoon and evening of Sunday 22 January. For those who have not been to this region can I point out that for an extended holiday there is some great sailing around the south coast. Kangaroo Island is not that far away and is one of the most extraordinary holiday venues in the whole of the country. The McLaren Vale Winery District is a mere half hour drive from Goolwa. The Coorong stretches 100 kilometres east along the back of the ocean beach and offers beauty to match the Whitsundays in near total privacy.

The Port Lincoln events are held one month later. For those who would consider leaving their boats with or without vehicles in South Australia arrangements can be made to leave them locally in secure conditions. Apart from the availability of local marinas I have the ability to store a number of boats/vehicles at my place and Rob Remilton can make similar arrangements.

The Port Lincoln Events

There are actually two separate events involved here. The Lexus Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race is scheduled to start Friday 17 February 2012. This is a 156 nautical mile race in the Southern Ocean finishing at the picturesque city of Port Lincoln. Port Lincoln is regarded as one of the most beautiful and outstanding harbours in the Southern Hemisphere. The event is open to boats 28’ plus in length who are equipped with Category 3 safety equipment. Compliance is strictly enforced by the Club with zero tolerance. For more info check out www.plyc.com.au. Or speak with either Rob Remilton or Peter Boyd.

Following this event there is a four day Lincoln Regatta Week starting Monday 20 February and ending the following Thursday. Races are conducted in Boston Harbour but sometimes there is a passage race to Tailor Island.

At this point in time it would appear that all of the South Australian boats known to our interstate colleagues will be participating together with some other local multis that may not be so well known outside this state. In addition, it is anticipated that a number of interstate boats will participate in both these events. Rob Remilton advises that Tony Considine will bring Mad Max across for these events. A spectacular week of sailing will be assured subject of course to weather conditions, which usually are good at that time of the year. Accommodation can be arranged through the Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre contactable on 1300 788 378 or (08) 8683 3544.

Conclusion

All of us here in South Australia are expecting a major turnout of local boats for all these events for which they are eligible to participate. We are also all hoping that many if not all of our interstate friends who are known to transport their boats will be able to participate. Please give it some thought. :You can contact me on 0413 430 767 or Rob Remilton on 0427 470 347 or John Hardy on 0418 552 006 or Peter Boyd on 0414 918 986.

Here’s hoping that we all get to see each other in South Australia early next year.

Kind regards

Ross McOmish

Hastings Yacht Club Xmas Dinner

Just a reminder about the Xmas Dinner on the 3rd December at Hastings Yacht Club. It would be great to see a table of the MYCV members there to celebrate and enjoy a good evening. Hastings is our only Physical Club House and without them I am not sure where the MYCV would be as I am know those that frequent Hastings appreciate this.

Please email Josie with your numbers $30 per head.
