Peccadillo’s Three Peaks Race 2012 – Leg 3 Coles Bay to Hobart (finish)

Before leaving Coles Bay, the skippers and crews discussed the difficult options ahead. With strong cold south westerlies forecast most skippers were looking for good reasons to use the Dunalley canal option, although neither option looked inviting.

Peccadillo's choice was more straight forward. We would not be able to tack in a narrow channel against a strong current and strong wind, nor could we physically drag her 7 tonnes through if needed. Also, it would not be in our best interest to follow Big Wave Rider into the canal where they would have the double advantage of being ahead of us as well as having a better chance of  getting through, so off we go to round Tasman Island.

Soon after starting with the wind around 20 knots we set our flattie spinnaker and take off at 22 to 25 knots thinking we could scream down the lee side of Tasman Island at record pace. The plan worked a treat until Marion Bay when we had to get rid of it quickly as we were hit by worrying successions of 50 knot bullets followed by near dead calm periods as night fell.

This led to an amazing experience as the black storm fronts opened a small crevice in the sky to allow the full moon to gleam through producing moonlight cliff faces and an amazing rainbow in the darkness of the night. The East coast of the Tasman peninsula was surreal and awe inspiring in these conditions although we were under no illusion about what to expect when we break free of the shadow of Tasman Island.

After a few massive windshifts in the sheltered conditions with our double reef and staysail, we headed into the darkness meeting 35knot and bitterly cold southwesterly winds, huge seas and ripping current. This was a tough slog, handling was tricky and required helming from the outside cockpit.

With extremely high wind chill, a 4 hour shift left me with frostbitten fingers then with the oncoming shift, conditions were voted as too dangerous so we sailed into nearby Safety Cove at Port Arthur and anchored to refresh and wait for expected easing of conditions at daybreak.

After a much needed five hours rest, conditions had improved and we managed to beat our way out of Storm Bay, and up to the finish, still with strong squalls all the way. Our rest period had let two more boats slip past and finish ahead.

Our two athletes came through the ordeal in good shape, set the fasted time over snow-capped Mt Wellington, missing the record time by just 3 minutes.

After counting elapsed time for the whole race we were second placed in the multis, four hours 10 minutes behind Big Wave Rider, who deserve great credit for managing to physically drag their boat through the canal to take the podium. The monos were won by Advantedge, who sailed an excellent race in the conditions. In all, six of the twelve boat fleet finished this particularly stormy Three Peaks.

MOD70's complete Transatlantic crossing New York to Brest.

All of the MOD70's have arrived in Brest.  Spindrift racing came in first followed by Edmond de Rothschild in second and Foncia in third place.  Oman sail suffered equipment failure when one of their float mounted lifting foils broke and the ended up having to shift their one remaining foil from port to starboard with each tack (their float mounted lifting foil weighs 100kgs!).  Race for water came in last they suffered damage when they hit a submerged container.

Next meeting - focus on multihull cruising

The next meeting of the club will be held at the Caulfield RSL, 4 St Georges Road, Elsternwick, at 7.30 on Wednesday 27th June. The RSL has an excellent meeting room, and the bar and dining room (good, well-priced food) is open from 6.00.

After the usual brief club business, there will be three short talks on multihull cruising, with questions and discussion to follow. Lindsay Cuming will focus on cruising the north and west coast of Australia, Alex McNaughton on the east coast, and Al Bennet on Bass Strait and on cruising in smaller multis. You won't get three more experienced skippers than these, so come along and invite anyone else you think may be interested, as all are welcome (especially prospective new members!).

Peccadillo’s Three Peaks Race 2012 – Leg 2 Lady Barron to Coles Bay

After the wild survival conditions of the first leg, we survived with little damage and prepared to do battle with our catamaran rivals "Big Wave Rider", "Storm Bay" and "Degeullo". Heading into the rough current-torn Banks Strait, we took a high course aiming to seek some relief close to landfall. This proved to be a slower route allowing others including BWR to take the wider course and develop a lead around Schouten Passage by the next morning. Meanwhile we had some close battles through the night with the other two cats "DG" & "SB" in the light conditions.

Once into Coles Bay it was a beat upwind with enough wind to occasionally fly a hull on "Peccadillo" to reach Coles Bay in second position behind "BWR" with John & Chris well rested and fired up for a good run. This proved to be true as the boys set a new record time for the Freycinet run, getting us underway again before dark, a few hours behind "BWR" who was heading for the Denison Canal.

Peccadillo’s Three Peaks Race 2012 – Leg 1 Beauty Point to Lady Barron

After much hard work and preparation Peccadillo lead the sail past on the start line at Beauty Point in Tasmania for the 2012 Three Peaks race.

With zero wind at the start, our two runners Chris Wight & John Winsbury manned the specially-engineered pedal propulsion system to put us ahead of the pack coming out of the Tamar River.

Our tactic for this leg was to sail fast under our reacher directly out into Bass Straight to place ourselves ahead of the approaching weather front and wind change leaving a free run into Franklin Sound towards the finish at Lady Barron. This seemed to be working as most of the fleet opted for the inshore route, as we changed to headsail then spinnaker as the wind began to build to the expected 25-35 knots.

By dark we thought ourselves to be in the box seat to snatch a big lead travelling at around 20 knots and the perfect course, until with the wind building over 35 knots true we managed a complete spinnaker wrap locking up the forestay. This was starting to get dangerous with the wind still building over 40 knots, seas rising, screaming towards rocky islands and needing to work the boat to a higher course. After several jibes we managed to unwrap the mess and thought ourselves lucky to have the spinnaker safely back in the bag in one piece.

With the wind now over 50 knots true, and down to staysail & 2nd reef, Peccadillo was difficult to handle so down to 3rd reef then drop main. We were now sailing under only a reefed staysail – but still doing 17 knots!

Now recording true winds of up to 63 knots (reports of 76 knots from another competitor) with nasty seas throwing the boat around, we navigated a careful course through the surrounding rocks and islands into Franklin Sound hoping for some relief, however we still faced the difficult task of tacking upwind to Lady Baron and the finish line.

This was proving to be extremely dangerous with the reduced control resulting from only a small staysail and having to gybe if we didn't make the tack (winds always over 50 and gusting). Several other competitors elected to motor past us to the finish and take the time penalty. In the end, we were third multihull in.

Thankfully we managed to deliver Chris & John in good shape to do the Mt Strezlecki run against 50 knot winds and rain. Despite the conditions, they set the fastest time for this running leg.
The extreme conditions of last night had taken its toll with the retirement of three yachts including the grounding of Haphazard. The race committee had little choice but to postpone the start of Leg 2 till later in the day as conditions abated.

Until the Leg 2 instalment, have a look at our race video...

Frassld @ Marlay Point overnight race 2012

Friday, a nice sail down to Loch Sport for the night, about midnight the wind went North and it started pushing me up onto the sand, so I motored out and anchored. Saturday, a nice fresh Westerly so a beat all the way to LWYC at Marlay Point, found a nice parking spot in the reeds. Lots of trailer sailors rigging and launching, and lots sailing down from Paynesville and anchoring out front, Lisa Lisa and Steve arrived in time for the briefing. With a South Easterly blowing Sknot decided to try and join us onshore, but the rocks were narrowly missed with the quick actions of some fellow sailors. Next minute the Bare Decided to take off as well so it was the Commodore at full gallop to the rescue! Quite a action packed Briefing! Time for the twilight start at 7.45 pm and soon after looking back at a sea of bow lights slowly fading in the distance. With Mad Max well out of sight Frassld was behind Bare Essentials with Dash just behind us as we entered the Mc Clelland Straights, we managed to get into 2nd place for a while but Dash passed us then we ran aground just after Hollands landing before entering Lake Victoria, Steve jumped in and saved the day. Bare passed us before Storm Point as did Sknot just after Point Turner but as we neared the GLYC at Paynesville the wind dropped out as did most of division M, but after being anchored, and a couple of hours sleep we decided to press on, we could just see Tripple Expresso sailing into Lake King so after 4 hours sailing around Raymond Island (and 16.5 hours since the start) we finally had a nice kite run over the finish line 36 seconds behind Tripple Expresso. Off the 15 division M boats only 4 finished. So a special thanks to my crew and the other competitors who traveled long distances to attend. Shaun Fishley

Kraken 25 trimaran project

I'm making progress on my Kraken 25 rebuild the triple diagonal skin lamination is completed on the main hull and it's ready to turn and begin fitout. For now I've moved onto the construction of the new floats I'd hoped to salvage the originals but they are too far gone to repair economically.  The packing strap helps to prevent crushing of the surface veneer and makes removing the staples a bit easier once the epoxy is set with the layer beneath.

Festival of Sail 2012

                                                                        Terri Dodds photo.

Melbourne to Geelong Race continued: We now only had Shogun V in front and were 200 metres from the gate, Bare foiled all the way up to their stern before the wind dropped off and we slowed to 10knts keeping pace with them. Shogun lifted to squeeze us out of the gate so we tucked in behind comforted by the fact we had the channel to come with cracked sheets. Once through the gate the wind returned, we hardened up to go around number 1 and were amazed as we foiled over the top of them and 2-3 knts quicker.

Once we entered the channel “it was showtime”. With no boats in front to get in our way, we sent The Bare to Geelong and what a ride it was up to pile 10. No screecher required and certainly No Rums Required!! One fisherman anchored just outside the channel nearly dropped his can when we went passed at 20 knts, main hull lifting out and only 5 metres away from him. By the time we rounded pile 10 Shogun was only half way down the channel and it was hard to contain the wry smile on my face.

Up we headed to the finish line, trying to find the 2 boats with a flag on top. Something serious would have to happen now for us not to win; however I did let that smile slip out a few minutes ago which can bring you bad luck. 500 metres from the finish and suddenly someone turned the wind off. Golly gosh I thought (possibly not the exact thoughts), it couldn’t happen to us could it??? The boat sat down with crew scampering to the leeward side. We putted along for a few minutes with Shogun getting larger every second. But without notice it returned and we crossed the line; HOOOOT what a lovely sound it was to hear. 3 hours 35 minutes and 57 seconds we did it! Hugs and kisses all-round (Please note kissing with Libby only) and we all had a can to celebrate while we watched the first few boats finish. We dropped the sails and motored over to the moorings where lunch and a swim were enjoyed.

Some will say we were lucky as the weather suited Bare Essentials and yes maybe there right, but Bare Essentials didn’t sail herself and at times we did push her to the limits. It was a great sail and it was great to sail with a fantastic team and share a memorable moment. Congratulations to Rob, Cruisey and Libby, take a bow and enjoy!

Festival of Sail 2012

                                                            Terri Dodd Photograph.

Melbourne to Geelong Race. 630am and up for coffee and bacon and eggs. Everything here seems reasonably priced, food, grog and Waterfront City berthing was $45 per night. Clean towels for showering and a yachty lounge where you can relax with a cuppa watching TV in air conditioning or jump on their 2 computers or simply plug in your own. 9am start and we were off on the sth. start line with the big boys. Left Waterfront City at 7.30am to give us plenty of time. There’s something about sailing out of the Yarra and looking out at all the other boats. It certainly gets the blood pumping, Having a ship as big as the Titanic coming out of the river at the same time also is a little nerve racking. That is one time I wish our trimaran was  a little thinner!!

We decided to make a pin end start and try and find some clear air. The water was chopped up a lot with all the boats and our small light tri didn't like it. We footed off and headed to shore and tacked our way up to the first mark. After a  minor port Starboard incident at the first mark, (like we were on starboard and they on port!!!) we settled down to chase to the second mark. It was disappointing to be approximately the 20th boat round with the first few boats already on the Horizon. We sailed along keeping pace with the 30-40 footers before the wind came in. Once we were able to foil the main hull lifted out of the water and we increase to around 15 knts which we held until we could ease sheets at channel marker 12A.

At this stage the 4 tp52's and living doll were still in front with the first 2 boats well down the leg. Now we were into the $1000000 boys and looking down the track thought they were too far in front to catch. With a steady 16-18knts blowing now, Bare Essentials was reaching a long at 18knts hitting 20knts in the gusts. We seem to pass Living Doll and the first TP52 quite quickly and suddenly dawned on me we might have a chance to be first over the line. Rob checked his GPS out and we still had 4 miles to the gate and a screaming reach up the channel after that. Well as the saying goes “No Guts No Glory” Lets go for it and see what happens.

“Put the screecher up and lets really chase these wonderful monos down” (not exact words used on the day). Libby moved to leeward and started un-clipping the screecher ready for hoisting. Just as she did, mother nature unleashed a bullet and we shot off at 20knts straight into a wave and for the first time on Bare I saw Cruisey shoot the Jib to lift the bow. Libby got wet a little I believe and I think it was a group decision that the screecher could stay exactly where it was! The “NO RUMS REQUIRED RULE’ came into play. For those of you not familiar with this rule, please see Chris sooky paints Culph from Sknot to explain.....Stay tuned for part 2.....

We brought the boat round early to sail a couple of club races at BYS,  take any interested members out for a sail and cruise with the family.
After talking to a family friend he kindly offered his mooring to us as he had sold his boat. After checking it out several times we were happy the boat was safe with plenty of swing room etc.
Anyway, didn’t quite check it out enough and ended up kissing a boat nearby. Quickly we pulled it out and up to Mornington to repair a couple superficial blemishes on the starboard float ready for our Festival of Sail regatta.

Tuesday 24th we met the Green Gorby boys and Daylight Robbery at Martha’s Cove and set up the boats for a cruise to Docklands the next day. Shaun and the Frassle crew sailed up from Blairgowrie and joined the cruise Nth.

David and Sophie Renouf  brought their new Corsair sprint down from Pittwater and stayed the night with Rob and myself. They caught the first ferry from Sorrento with Leon (Rainbow Man) to Queenscliff and set the boat up at Geelong so their car and trailer were there for a quick exit. Surprisingly they did all this and got into Docklands only 60-90 minutes after the rest of us. After a few drinks and an official  welcome from Doug Jarvious (Manager) we all showered and all went out for dinner with the Patronas Crew who arrived 2 days before. Geoff Cruise our crusty import from Qld. was well lubricated after spending the day with Keith (Freddy) Dunstan and his commitment was questioned as he choice to sleep on the floating caravan instead of the pedigree.

It was a nice day sailing up to Melbourne with 5 to 15 knts from the Sth. sth West which meant spinnakers were flown and great to catch up with everybody over dinner before the fun started….. Day 1 Passage Race coming soon.

Report on MYCV promotional stand at Melbourne Summer Boat Show

I had a look through my stack of flyers after the show and found that we had handed out 50 in total so probably not a bad result given the relatively low attendance at the show.  I hope that we will welcome some new members into the club that we met at the event.  I'd like to thank Ian Andersen for being stalwart and putting in two full days on the stand my father Graeme McKenzie for dropping in one arvo to help and Terry Pemberton for surviving natures onslaught, manning the stand on Sunday and staying on to help with packing up.  Looking forward to getting some more promotional material together for the club and maybe printing up some more colour banners to make a more eyecatching display in future.
